May’s Monthly Meeting – Hands On & Turning Clinic.

Quick on the heels of Daventry we had our monthly meeting at the Village Hall.

It was our second Hands On and Turning Clinic of the year and once again we had an excellent turnout on the evening. Club Chairman, Richard Pinches, opened the meeting by thanking everyone who helped at Daventry and came along to the show. He also said how well we had done over the two days (see the previous update).

Richard also announced that we were making club member, Bryan Newman, an Honorary Member. Bryan has his 90th birthday on the 21st of this month

Bryan has been a member for 25 years and had served on the club committee for a number of those years. Richard explained that Bryan had looked after the club library and had also been a member of the team that attended the outside events to promote the club.

Without Bryan’s contribution we would not have the club that we have today, and it was a pleasure to be able to recognise Bryan in this way

Richard also announced that he was setting a Chairman’s Challenge for the next Hands On meeting in July. You can find out exactly what the challenge is on the Chairman’s Challenge page on this website.

With the formalities completed we got on with the evening.

It was all go on the night with all 3 club lathes were in operation. Trevor Cocks was talking members through how to turn apples and pears, Tony Jones was tutoring novice turners on how to turn a garden dibber, and we welcomed AWGB Midland Rep, Barrie Fisher who showed members various ways that they could decorate their work with paint and sand.

Mike Crocket and Ray Muggleton were also on hand to show members how they could use pyrography to decorate their work. It was good to see members have a go at using the equipment and appreciate how easy it is to achieve excellent results.

If you wanted a little bit of inspiration you could look no further than the lady we met at Daventry – Kez Halliday. Here are examples of her work.

Of course it would not be a Hands On night without our members work table. This month there were some fantastic pieces on show. A big thank you to everyone who brought their work along, it always inspires other members to try something new. Here are photographs of just a few of the items on display.

The club raffle was again well supported and a big thanks goes to Tom Delves for running it for us on the night. Everything that we make on the raffle is ploughed back into the club whether that is covering the cost of outdoor events, new equipment or running costs, so thank you for participating.
