Despite several changes to the evening we had planned, June’s club meeting offered up plenty of different ideas for enhancing and decorating members work.
At the start of the meeting, Club Chairman, Mike Delves spoke about the sad passing of founding member, Pat Clarke, and of his contribution and generosity to the club. We then held a minutes silence, which was impeccably observed, followed by a round of applause in recognition of Pat. We will be looking at a more permanent tribute to Pat in the coming weeks.
For the rest of the evening, we had a number of different activities set up in the hall, alongside our regular usual features.

We were pleased to welcome AWGB Midland Rep, Barrie Fisher, who showed members various methods of decorating their work with paint, string and a few feathers. Barrie made it all look simple, and the effects that he achieved were certainly impressive. I reckon that we will have one or two members who will be giving it a go on their work in the near future.

Whilst Pyrography Artist, Connie, was unable to attend the evening, our own Ray Muggleton, Mike Crockett and myself stepped in to show what can be achieved with the right equipment and a little patience. We were encouraged by the number of members who came along and had a go, and hopefully they found out how easy it can be to burn patterns and art onto their work.

Elsewhere in the Hall we also had Kerry Clarke showing us how he uses Rubio Monocoat on his work to enhance the colour and finish. Kerry uses Rubio on a regular basis and has also done a day training at their base.

Of course we also had our usual activities going on. Trevor ran the club lathe, and Tom Phoenix ran his sharpening school. Both of them were happy to pass on their experience and tips to make turning and sharpening that little bit easier.
The Bring and Buy table proved to be popular, with various items for sale. Remember that this will be a part of our Hands On evenings going forward so please don’t hesitate to bring anything you would like to sell.

And finally, it would not be a Hands On night without our members work table. There were some truly beautiful pieces that members brought to share, so thank you to everyone who brought something. Here are just a few of the items that were on display:
