On the back of the recent shows and our Hands On evenings, I wanted to remind everyone to follow a couple of basic Health and Safety rules when using the lathe or equipment.
- Eye Protection. It goes without saying that whenever you are doing any turning you should protect your eyes from dust, splinters, shavings etc. Lately, we have see a few members turning without any eye protection and this is not only a risk but does not set a good example to new turners. Without exception can you please ensure that when ever you are turning you always wear eye protection (glasses, goggles or a face mask are acceptable)
- Loose Items should be removed or tucked into clothing. Before starting turning all members should ensure that loose items that can get caught in the lathe are either removed or tucked into clothing. This is particularly applicable to the lanyards that we all wear to carry our AWGB Membership Cards and Meeting Pre-payment cards. The lanyard is not designed to break if it gets caught up in the lathe, and as a result it could cause severe injury. Please don’t let it happen, take it off before having a go on the lathes.
If we can obey these simple rules, then it will ensure that we all enjoy our club nights and outdoor events without the addition of extra risk.
Please remember, whilst we have a first aid kit your committee and fellow turners do not want to have to use it because you failed to follow the basics.
I think the Club should have eye protection on every lathe! what has happened to the club Full face Visors ?
